Beyond the Revolution: A History of American Thought from Paine to Pragmatism
William H. Goetzmann was a mentor of mine at The University of Texas, where he helped to pioneer American studies and taught me in that graduate program. He won the 1967 Francis Parkman and Pulitzer Prizes for Exploration and Empire: The Explorer and Scientist in the Winning of the American West. His fiery enthusiasm for the field was inspirational and the publication of Beyond the Revolution, his last book, reminded me how rewarding true intellectual history and American studies should be.
