Though I do not subscribe to Rand’s philosophies, this book, and the teacher who assigned it, helped open my eyes to the possibilities of, and potential for, an intellectual life. I thank that teacher, Mrs. French, as well as other wonderful educators and mentors who followed — Drs. Klinzing, Orr, Jenks, and Hobbs. And I thank my mother, who bought me this book, and first encouraged me to write my own.
