Policy UL-HR02 Holiday Closings

In some instances throughout the year, the University Libraries may be closed on a day that is not an official University holiday. For example, if Independence Day falls on a Sunday, the University will typically observe the holiday on Monday, although the Libraries may be closed to the public on both Sunday and Monday.

When the Libraries are closed on a day that is not a University holiday, employees who are normally scheduled to work that day will have two options:

  • They may use accumulated vacation time or their personal holiday to receive pay for the day.
  • Or, the supervisor may adjust the employee’s schedule to make up the day within the same workweek (Sunday through Saturday). The employee must work with his/her supervisor to schedule the time when it is mutually beneficial. All schedule changes require supervisory approval.

Non-exempt employees have the additional option of taking the day unpaid.

There is no requirement that arrangements be made to allow the employee to work on a day that the Libraries are closed, unless we are directed to by the University on that occasion. When this is the case, Libraries Human Resources will inform supervisors so that arrangements can be made.
