Photographs

This subgroup contains photographs from the war years and from veteran’s groups after the war.

Headquarters Groups, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged by 8th Air Force Command structure, then numerically by group. Series contains photos of commanders and personnel assigned to groups, and medals and commendations given to personnel. There are also large group photos for some of the command groups.

Ground Crews, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arrange by type of ground service the group provided, then numerically by group.  Series contains photos of weather squadron aircraft, crews working on aircraft at air depots.

Special Operations and Reconnaissance Groups, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged numerically. Series contains photos of aircraft flown by search and rescue crews and photographic reconnaissance crews.

Fighter Groups, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.3 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged by 8th Air Force Command structure, then numerically. Series contains photos of personnel, aircraft, and bases.

Medium Bomber Groups, 1942; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged numerically by bomb group number. Series contains photos of personnel and aircraft.

Bomber Wings, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged numerically by bomb wing number. Series contains photos of wing commanders, personnel.

Bomber Groups, 1942-1945; Quantity: 1.0 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged numerically by bomb group number. Series contains photos of aircraft, personnel.

Support Groups, 1942-1945; Quantity: 0.1 cubic feet Series contains photos of personnel.

General World War II, 1942-1945; Quantity: 1.0 cubic feet Series contains photos of air crews standing in front of their aircraft, crashes, aircraft in flight, various photos of air bases, briefing and debriefing flight crews, 8th Air Force generals, British royalty visiting bases, churches and stained glass windows, flak damage to aircraft, flak maps, German aircraft and pilots, German buildings that were damaged, Glenn Miller Band, ground crews, groups photos, various aerial photos of coastlines, European villages and the countryside, falling bombs, post bombing reconnaissance, individuals and small groups, medal ceremonies, nose art, POWs, internment photos from Sweden and Switzerland, WACs, and waist gunners.

Post World War II, 1970s-1990s; Quantity: 1.0 cubic feet; Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically. Series contains photos from air shows, refurbished aircraft, bomber jackets and other clothing, museum exhibits, memorials, reunions in England, individuals and small groups, license plates, the Memphis Belle, 8AFHS reunions in the U.S., and wreckage recoveries. There are also photos of Jimmy Stewart who was a bomber pilot.
