Search Results Overview

So now that you’ve learned some basic search techniques to yield good results, let’s take a look at what you’ll find!

On the search results page, you’ll see a number of specific resources presented within boxes. Think of them as compartments that hold information of a specific type that are directly relevant to your keyword search. Each box lists the top three results and provides a link to all results at the bottom of the box.

So what’s in the boxes? Let’s take a look!

Journal Articles

This box presents all Scholarly & Peer Reviewed materials except book reviews. These are mostly journal articles, but some ebook chapters and other scholarly materials are included as well.

Books and Media

This box presents books and other resources like journals, government documents, maps, archival collections, music, videos, and more from our Library Catalog

News and Magazine Articles

This box presents news and magazine articles found through the Libraries' subscriptions. To search more news articles, try our NewsFinder

Our Website

This box is where you’ll find public website content related to your keyword search. For example, if you search for “printers,” this box will show all the pages on this website which have information about printers in the Libraries.

Databases

This box lists the descriptions and categories of our database subscriptions related to your keywords. Databases contain everything from financial data to journal articles which aren’t in LionSearch. Searching for the right databases is a little different than searching for journal articles or books and media, since some databases cover one very specific topic and some cover many.

For example, if you had searched for articles on “penguin migration” and wonder whether we might have materials about penguin migration in our databases, try “zoology” or “biology” or “wildlife” to find the right databases. Then search inside these databases for  penguin migration articles.

Experts

Our library experts are here to help you with your assignment or research. When your search keyword matches one of the terms experts have chosen to describe their specialties, you’ll see them displayed here. Like databases, the ways experts are described doesn’t cover every possible keyword. If you don't see an expert, click through to the experts page and sort by campus or filter by kinds of expertise.

Library Guides

Many of our experts create guides, which are collections of resources to help you find things you need. These guides might be specific to your course or might give you advice on a particular area of research. We also have guides for general things you need to know, like how to create a bibliography for your paper.

You can keep searching from each box presented on the results page by using the link at the bottom of the box. Need to search in more places? Try Advanced Search at the top of the page or use links in the “What’s Not Here?” box.
