This is a seminal work in the field of child development and has influenced my own efforts to better help children at risk. The authors identify divergent language pathways very early in children's lives and also show how these pathways have the potential to reduce the opportunities for many even before school begins. I've always appreciated the careful and sustained scholarship, and it really shows the rich understanding that results from over-time study of children's earliest experiences.
