One of the ways in which the University Libraries faculty promote student learning is through the development and teaching of credit-bearing courses, whether offered through the Library Studies Program, another college, or the World Campus. Teaching by members of the Libraries faculty is expected to be of high quality and to advance the educational experiences of students in their courses.
The faculty members who teach credit-bearing courses and are undergoing formal review are required to have a holistic review of student feedback included in their dossier or promotion materials. This review is conducted using the qualitative and quantitative data from the Student Educational Experience Questionnaire (SEEQ) and, when applicable, the Student Rating of Teaching Effectiveness (SRTE).
Evaluation Process
The evaluation of SEEQ/SRTE data will be conducted by a group of two faculty members chosen by the Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communication to serve as reviewers.
- One reviewer must be selected from a list of two to three potential reviewers suggested by the candidate undergoing formal review. The list of potential reviewers must be provided to the Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communication by the candidate.
- The other reviewer must be a member of the University Libraries first-level promotion and tenure review committee, or University Libraries first-level promotion review committee. Whenever possible, the reviewer chosen for this responsibility should have experience with teaching credit-bearing courses.
The reviewers will examine the SEEQ/SRTE data from available courses in the initial review period, or for the period since the candidate’s last formal review. As applicable, reviewers should pay particular attention to student feedback that relates to the elements of effective teaching: effective course design, effective instruction, inclusive and ethical pedagogy, and reflective and evolving practice.
A holistic report, not to exceed 750 words, summarizing the SEEQ/SRTE data will be submitted to the Office of the Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communication to be included in the dossier or promotion materials. If a candidate believes that the report inadequately represents their teaching effectiveness based on student feedback, candidates may revise their narrative statements to address the discrepancy.
SEEQ/SRTE scores will be included in an appendix to the dossier. The delivery mode of the course and the distribution, mode, and median for SEEQ/SRTE items will be provided for each course. All candidates have the option of including raw SEEQ/SRTE data in their supplemental materials.
