A new University-licensed Starbucks cafe opened on August 20, 2018 on the first floor of Paterno Library. The new 2,800 square foot facility, operated by Penn State Food Services, more adequately accommodates high demand for food and beverage service and seating, relieving the space constraints in the former cafe on ground floor West Pattee. Adjacent to the cafe is MacKinnon's Lounge, a newly refurbished space for group study and expanded student seating as well as for newspaper services.
The two departments formerly occupying the first floor Paterno space - Cataloging and Metadata Services and Acquisitions - relocated to newly renovated space on the ground floor of Paterno Library in May 2018. One portion of 126 Paterno was retained for Special Collections cataloging faculty and staff offices, an expanded Receiving Room, movement of materials from the Receiving Room to ground floor Paterno, and a proposed multi-purpose staff conference/meeting room.
