This collection contains 3D printed artifacts fabricated by various manufacturers and technology developers, including Ennex Corporation. Collection also includes conference proceedings, videos, corporate records, and publications related to 3D fabrication. There are also 1.4 Terabytes of digital records, including design files, photographs, and audio-visual materials, created and kept by Ennex Corporation. This company was founded by Marshall Burns in 1991 as Ennex Fabrication Technologies.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Pennsylvania State University Libraries purchased this collection from Ennex Corporation and its president, Marshall Burns, in 2018.

Processing Information

Upon acquisition, library staff housed and created a preliminary inventory of collection materials. In 2020, Caitlin Rizzo minimally processed this collection to create series using the original order compiled by Ennex Corporation President Marshall Burns. Rizzo created additional series to separate media types according to storage and technical access requirements. Rizzo additionally revised the arrangement to reflect the original order established by Marshall Burns and revised description to reflect facts of technical detail provided by Burns at a later date.

Appraisal

Upon initial accession, archivists removed duplicated copies of individual monographs. At this time, archivists also removed several boxes of "everyday" items used to demonstrate fabrication. Archivists recorded the removal of the following items from the collection: 6 empty cardboard boxes, a container of Legos and other toys, a bag of yarn, a container of Crayola modeling clay, a jar of gumballs, a hatchet, a garden trowel, a box of assorted tape, adhesives, plastic wrap and aluminum foil, plastic letters, assorted art supplies, aprons, costume supplies, and a foam block.

Scope and Contents

This series contains 90 3D printed objects made using a variety of automated fabrication technologies between 1991 and 2003. The objects range in size from 1.0 cm - 28.5 centimeter long.

Artifacts include: "Gear Trees" (1991) produced on a Cubital Solider 5600, "Human Hand" (1997) and "Fractured Skull" (1994) produced by selective curing (photopolymer) using a 3D Systems SLA printer, "Automotive tire tread" (1991) produced by bond-first pattern lamination (paper) on a Helisys LOM printer, and "Automotive weather stripping (pattern and rubber copy)" (1992) produced by selective curing (acrylic) on a 3D Systems SLA printer by Laserform Corporation, "Architectural model" (circa 1997) produced by selective curing (acrylic) on a 3d Systems SLA printer, "Tuna" (1996) produced by using a cut-first pattern lamination (vinyl) on the Ennex Genie prototype, and two Ennex Autofab Collection Travelling Selections (self-contained collection of sample fabricator outputs to help clients understand the capabilities of various machines for the market), among others.

Scope and Contents

Ennex Corporation's Industry Library contains 20 reference books, 28 conference proceedings, and rare serials related to automated fabrication and the 3D Printing industry. Notable titles include a complete run of the serial "Rapid Prototyping Report" (1991-2002) and several issues of  "Time-Compression Technologies North America",  "Prototyping Technology International", and  "Rapid News", among others. This series also includes a number of annual directors, booklets, brochures, and ephemera accumulated by the corporation.

This series includes multimedia produced by various industry sources, including 31 videocassettes (VHS) which feature promotional and documentary multimedia produced by DTM, 3D Systems, Stratasys, Helisys, Cubital, and Ennex, among others and 44 additional audio/videocassettes (across various formats) which document the speaking engagements of Ennex President Marshall Burns.

Materials include 770 digital documents, photographs, and CAD designs related to the automated fabrication or 3D printing industry; 2,505 records documenting the business and projects of Ennex Corporation; 9,220 files documenting the Ennex family of websites from 2001-2004; approximately 5,000 records from Ennex Corporation's internal database which document various events, meetings, correspondence, financial transactions, and patents/publications used for research.
