Sister Joan Chittister is an author, lectured, and the founder and executive director of Benetvision. She has authored more than fifty books, hundreds of articles, an online column for the National Catholic Reporter, and a blog for the Huffington Post. Biographical / Historical

Sister Joan Chittister, born 1936, is a Benedictine Nun, author, lecturer, and the founder and executive director of Benetvision. She has served as president of the Conference of America Benedictine Prioresses and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and as the co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, a U.N. sponsored organization creating a worldwide network of women peacemakers, with the belief that women have a role in finding alternatives to violence.

Chittister holds a Bachelor's degree from Mercyhurst University, a Master's degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Speech Communication Theory from the Pennsylvania State University. She has travelled extensively and is noted as an international lecturer as well as a former Fellow at St. Edmunds College, Cambridge University, England. She has appeared on numerous TV programs including "60 Minutes" and was a featured guest of Oprah Winfrey on "Super Soul Sunday". She has passionately advocated on behalf of peace, women's issues, human rights and church renewals. In 2014, a lecture series was inaugurated at Mercyhurst University in her name.

Scope and Contents

The collection features Sister Joan Chittister's personal correspondence; audio and audio-visual recordings of various speeches, conferences, panels, broadcasts, and other presentations; and digital-files consisting of interview transcripts and the text for various writings authored by Sister Joan Chittister.
