Biographical Note

Ivan Illich, the noted social historian, was born in 1926 in Vienna, Austria. He was forced to leave school in 1941 because of his Jewish ancestry and went to Italy where he studied in Florence and Rome's Gregorian University before returning to Austria to obtain a doctorate in history from the University of Salzburg. He entered the Roman Catholic priesthood and served in New York, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Illich became well known for championing the rights of Puerto Rican immigrants, and lay members of the church, as well as for his vocal criticism of much of church doctrine. A co-founder of the controversial Center for Intercultural Documentation in Cuernavaca, Mexico, he left the priesthood in 1969 after being branded politically immoral by the Vatican. His seminal works on Deschooling Society and Medical Nemesis explore the problems created by the institutionalization of education and medicine. Dr. Illich died in Bremen, Germany, on December 2, 2002.
