Collection Overview

The collection contains personal and general correspondence, memoranda, resolutions, pamphlets, broadsides, affidavits, financial records, newspaper clippings and memorabilia highlighting Curtiss' activities as a Steel Workers Organizing Committee staff representative and organizer, and United Steelworkers of America district director. These materials chiefly document SWOC's Bethlehem Steel organizing drive in Johnstown, Pa. from 1937 to 1939, and in Bethlehem, Pa. from 1939 to 1941. For the years preceeding his affiliation with the Steelworkers union, Curtiss' activities as a clergyman and social reformer are documented in letters, financial records, and ledgers. Notable correspondents include several steelworkers union officials: David J. McDonald, Emil John (E.J.) Lever, Clinton S. Golden, and Van A. Bittner.
