Glenn N. "Nick" Thiel was the successful Penn State men's lacrosse coach from 1935 to 1956. Glenn F. Thiel was a midfielder on the Penn State lacrosse team from 1964 to 1966, was the coach at the University of Virginia (1970-1977), and returned to Penn State as head coach from 1978 to 2010.
Abstract:
This collection includes newspaper clipping scrapbooks, magazine articles, team yearbooks, media guides, and photographs, as well as papers related to lacrosse face masks and histories of intercollegiate lacrosse in the United States.

Biographical or Historical Note

Glenn N. "Nick" Thiel was the successful Penn State men's lacrosse coach from 1935 to 1956. His overall record was 87-110. He served as the secretary-treasurer of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and received its Man-of-the-Year award in 1945 and 1947. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966.Glenn F. Thiel was a midfielder on the Penn State lacrosse team from 1964 to 1966, and served as co-captain his senior year. He began his coaching career at the Community College of Baltimore, with a 14-6 record in two years. He was the coach at the University of Virginia from 1970 to 1977, compiling a 68-30 record. His 1970 squad tied for the USILA national title and his 1972 team won the NCAA Championship. He returned to Penn State as head coach from 1978 to 2010, compiling a 236-186 record. He led Penn State to its first NCAA championships in 2003 and 2005 and was named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Coach of the Year in 2005. He was a former member of the executive board of the USILA and served on the organization's All-American and National Rankings Committees, actively promoting lacrosse. He is a past member of the United State Lacrosse Coaches Association executive board and was involved in the selection of the 1982, 1986, and 1990 U.S. world teams.
