Biographical Note

Gerald M. Phillips, scholar and researcher in speech communication, perhaps best known for his innovative approach to speech training for the shy, was born 1 December 1928, to Oscar and Henrietta Phillips in Cleveland, Ohio. Phillips enrolled in 1947 at Adelbert College of Western Reserve University with a full scholarship. He graduated from Western Reserve (B.A., speech and rhetoric, minor British history, 1949; M.S., speech and speech pathology, 1950; Ph.D., speech and rhetoric with a minor in history and religion, 1956) with a dissertation, "The Theory and Practice of Rhetoric at the Babylonian Talmudic Academies from 70 C.E. to 500 C.E." In 1949 he married Nancy Koslen; they had four children, Dean, Judith, Ellen, and Abigail. In 1955, Phillips was paralyzed with polio, recovering against odds within a year.

Phillips became an instructor in speech at North Dakota Agricultural College (1956-1958), assistant professor of speech at the Washington State University (1958-1964), associate professor (1964-1968) and professor of speech communication (1968-1992) at The Pennsylvania State University. Phillips helped to design and implement the Penn State Reticence Program that used his "rhetoritherapy" to teach shy students how to overcome the fear of speaking in social and professional situations. Phillips pioneered computer-mediated communication in the 1980s, teaching undergraduate and graduate speech communication courses by computer and email from his home. He directed more than 120 master's and doctoral students, wrote widely, was active in professional and community organizations, consulted, edited, and was a noted doodler. In 1992, Phillips retired from Penn State as professor emeritus of speech communication and died on 26 April 1995.
