Geocache

The Earth and Mineral Sciences Library Geocache: By George

  • The EMS Library geocache is hidden among our collection.
  • Follow these clues to find the cache and learn a little about libraries along the way!
  • Unlike the typical multicache that requires GPS coordinates to find the first clue, you are starting from this page so you already know the room number and building to begin your search!
  • From here, the only clue to the next stage is in the name of the geocache - By George.

Good hunting!

"Snowmen" Rocks in front of Deike Building

If you would like to follow the clues to this multicache from the beginning, see the following:

N 40° 47.658 W 077° 51.944
UTM: 18T E 258224 N 4519874
(The waypoint for "By George" is GCQXJR.)

At this location is a collection of stacked stones, installed when the west entrance to Deike building was renovated in 2007.  These stacked stones (also known as cairns or obos (Japanese)) are glacial erratics - small boulders left behind by glaciers – from a quarry near Erie, Pennsylvania.

To find the next clue to the By George geocache, count the number of stones in the ‘snowmen’ stacks. Multiply that number by the number of words above the entry doors to Deike.  From that number, subtract the number of words above the entry doors.  This sum is the room number in Deike building where By George can be found.

To see the snowmen being constructed and installed, visit the Deike Building Entrance page from Derek Kalp.
