The Tukey House

Loren and Louise Tukey

Louise keeps the flag flying to greet passersby. The home is one of the “Houses for Three Veterans” grouped together on Glenn Road. The Tukeys, Grosslights, and Berlins were friends who decided to become neighbors. None was especially well off, but they liked good design and approached Phil to bargain for a good rate. They reached an agreement with him. Phil himself was a WWII Navy veteran and amenable to a diverse clientele.

The group split the architectural fees equally, though the houses were of differing designs and complexity. To further save costs they purchased similar appliances, furnaces, and windows and used the same builder. The massive chimney, horizontal redwood fence, and alternating green panels for windows with areas of vertical redwood boards are distinguishing architectural features.

Louise became the unofficial “historian” of the neighborhood and still occupies the house. Loren was Professor of Pomology in the College of Agriculture and the couple traveled extensively to international horticulture meetings.
