Philip Ayres, "Emblems of Love in four Languages, Dedicated to the Ladys by Philip Ayres, Esp." S. Nicholls sculpt: Printed for John Wren, Bookseller & Binder at ye Bible & Crown near Great Turn-Style Holborn.

Page numbering:
The page numbering scheme follows the number of emblems rather than the number of folios. Each emblem covers two facing pages: the verso of the left page holds the illustration, while the recto of the right page holds the title of the emblem and the verse translations of the emblem's meaning into Latin, English, Spanish (?), and French. The verso of the text page and the recto of the following emblem illustration were left blank. For the purposes of scanning and displaying the images on a monitor, the emblem and the text were scanned together as one image file and numbered according to the emblem number. The blank folios were not scanned.

AyresA01_02 Prefatory pages with the title page and illustration on the inside cover and the sonnet: "Cupid to Chloe Weeping: A Sonnet." written on the first page;
Ayres01 Full-page illustration of the first emblem and translation of the first emblem text into Latin, English, Spanish, and French;
Ayres44 Full-page illustration of the final emblem and translation of the final emblem text into Latin, English, Spanish, and French

Scanner settings:
(Images optimized for closest color reproduction in Netscape Navigator 4.0 and sized to make the smallest text legible on a 17" monitor) Type: Sharp Millions of Colors Resolution: 100 dpi for viewing, 600 dpi for archival images Brightness: 140 Contrast: 147 ***note: when the scanner bulb washed out the text too much, the brightness was reduced by increments of 2 and the contrast reduced by increments of 1 until the text could be read. The settings were reduced no lower than 134 brightness and 145 contrast.*** Scanner used: Hewlett Packard ScanJet 3c/ADF Scanning software: Hewlett Packard Deskscan II and Image Assistant v1.12

Notes about the physical condition of the book: The book is small and has a leatherbound cover. The leather currently covering the exterior is a more recent addition, covering over the older leather cover, remnants of which can be seen on the spine and the edges of the cover. The older cover has a lighter color and is textured with pitting/pores? The spine and the outside edges to the cover also have been incised and filled with gold; the spine has golden double incised lines along the top and bottom, and a golden, incised, diagonal patterning decorates the outside edges of the cover. In contrast, the leather placed over the flat exterior surface of the cover is darker, smoother, and shows greater signs of aging -- cracking, crumbling, etc.

The pages of the book are in excellent condition, with a linen weave and texture. Most of the pages remain in the binding, but some have become loose or separated completely. No evidence of water damage, bookworms, rips, tears, or yellowing appears on any of the pages, although vague discolorations do appear. The pages have been trimmed down and rebound at least once, as may be seen with the uneven outside margins (note the difference in outside margins on emblems 8 and 15). I In the case of emblem 17, the outside edge of the page has been trimmed away to the point where the left edge of the image has been lost. In emblem 43, the final line of text in English translation extends beyond the outline and into the margin, where the final word was trimmed short.

Francis Quarles, "Emblems, Divine and Moral"

Page numbering:
QuA1-7 Prefatory pages A1 Title page with illustration A2-3 Dedication
NOTE: First emblem is unnumbered. Numbering following the first emblem is consecutive by page: Qu0-1 First emblem and first page of text All subsequent pages are consecutive. All scans/files are of two pages of physical text. All filenames include page numbers.

Scanner settings:
(Images optimized for closest color reproduction in Netscape Navigator 4.0 and sized to make the smallest text legible on a 17" monitor) Type: Sharp Millions of Colors Resolution: 110 dpi (to best display two pages of text), 600 dpi for archival images. Brightness: 123 Contrast: 145 Scanner used: Hewlett Packard Scanjet 3c/ADF Scanning software: Hewlett Packard Deskscan II and Image Assistant v.1.12

Notes about the physical condition of the book: Small book with leatherbound cover - probably not original binding? Pages in good condition - gilt edged. No crumbling or torn pages, although some are stained.

Discrepancies: Following page 136, Book 3, page 133 repeats and follows again consecutively, i.e. p.136, p.133, p.134, p.135, p.136, p.137 . . . etc. Only page numbers for pp. 133-136 are duplicated, not image or text content. Due to this discrepancy, there are two files for the scans of pages 134 and 135. Filenames are differentiated as follows: Qu134_35.tif - first scan file Qu134.35.tif - second scan file Also, while the first page 136 appears with a book 3 designation, the following, second page 133 appears with a book 2 designation which continues through page 148. Book 3 resumes with page 149. Again, image/text content does not appear to be duplicated. Also, page 200 appears to be misnumbered as page 202. In sequence as follows: pg. 198, 199, 202, 201, 202, 203 . . . No duplication of image/text. All scanning/jpg conversions completed June 23, 1988 --JCH --4 June 1998

Page numbering:
Please note that gaps occur in the page numbering. Book II ends on page 124 and leads to Book III which opens with page 135. Likewise, Book III ends on page 196 and leads to Book IV which begins on page 209. The difference in pages cannot be accounted for by taking into consideration the front matter for Books III and IV.
